A Comparison of RAS and Entropy Methods in Updating IO Tables AgEcon
Ahmed, Syud Amer; Preckel, Paul V..
Since the first half of the 20th century, the input-output (IO) table has been the backbone of much empirical work used to support policy analysis and develop economy-wide models. The need for accurate, up-to-date IO tables is thus essential for establishing the validity of the empirical work that follows from them. However, the construction of an IO table for any given country is an expensive and time-consuming endeavor. Current and accurate IO tables for many countries are thus often difficult to obtain on a regular basis. Once an initial IO table has been constructed, a common workaround is to collect partial information for subsequent periods, such as final demands for commodities within the economy, and then employ a Bayesian parameter estimation...

A MODEL FOR THE ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF PLANTATION BIOMASS PRODUCTION FOR CO-FIRING WITH COAL IN ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION AgEcon
Nienow, Sara; McNamara, Kevin T.; Gillespie, Andrew R.; Preckel, Paul V..
Public and private electric utilities are considering co-firing biomass with coal as a strategy to reduce the levels of CO2, SO2 and NO, in stack emissions, as well as a response to state legislative mandates requiring the use of renewable fuels. This analysis examines the conditions under which biomass co-firing is economically feasible for utilities and woody biomass producers and describes additional environmental and community benefits associated with biomass use. This paper presents a case study of woody biomass production and co-firing at the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) Michigan City Unit No.12 power plant. A Salix (willow) production budget was created to assess the feasibility of plantation tree production to supply biomass to...

A Modified, Implicit, Directly Additive Demand System AgEcon
Cranfield, John A.L.; Preckel, Paul V.; Hertel, Thomas W..
A recently developed demand system, nicknamed AIDADS, offers a more general approach to capturing consumption preferences. AIDADS generalizes the LES by assuming marginal budget shares vary indirectly with expenditure. AIDADS is limited by the fact that the subsistence parameters are constant across expenditure. We modify AIDADS by replacing the constant subsistence parameters with a function which varies with utility, and hence expenditure. The modified AIDADS (MAIDADS) allows subsistence levels to vary with expenditure. This model is applied to the 1996 International Consumption Project data. As these data span a wide range of expenditure levels, MAIDADS offers a viable alternative when estimating "global demand systems." Results suggest...

Analysis of Economically Optimal Nutrition and Marketing Strategies for Paylean® Usage in Hog Production AgEcon
Li, Ning; Preckel, Paul V.; Foster, Kenneth A.; Schinckel, Allan P..
An approach to the development of the economically optimal dietary concentration of Paylean, duration of the Paylean feeding, and dietary lysine concentration for finishing hog production is presented. A simulation model describing daily growth of hogs under different Paylean and lysine concentration combinations was adapted for optimizing nutrition and marketing when feed is supplemented with Paylean. Net returns per pig space per day under four alternative payment schemes are maximized based on 10-year average price levels and production costs. Profitability of Paylean is investigated, and management strategies for swine production with Paylean are developed for two representative finishing operations.

CHANGES IN THE STRUCTURE OF GLOBAL FOOD DEMAND AgEcon
Cranfield, John A.L.; Hertel, Thomas W.; Eales, James S.; Preckel, Paul V..
A newly developed demand system is used to estimate the response of food and food product demand to per capita expenditure changes. The resulting Engel elasticities are then used to project food and food product demand in 2020 assuming per capita expenditure and population changes. Results suggest that while food expenditure is projected to grow, it accounts for a smaller proportion of total expenditure. Further analysis indicates change in the composition of food demand away from a grain and towards livestock is projected to occur in lower income countries in 2020.

CONTRACT INCENTIVES AND EXCESSIVE NITROGEN USE IN AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Preckel, Paul V.; Shively, Gerald E.; Baker, Timothy G.; Chu, Mei-Chin; Burrell, Jessica Eide.
This study examines incentives for input use under tournament contracts. We analyze implications of contract design for nitrate-based environmental externalities generated by agricultural producers. Outcomes are compared from contracts awarded by tournament to those from fixed-payment contracts. Our findings show contract insecurity can distort input use. The model developed in this analysis is applied to a region of the U.S. where tournament-based production is prevalent and groundwater contamination is a problem. We find contract insecurity increases nitrogen use by about 12%, resulting in a 17% increase in nitrate leaching. Implications for contract modification to reduce environmental externalities while maintaining contract incentives are discussed.

Cost-of-Service vs. Uniform Pricing in a Cooperative Feed Manufacturing and Distribution System AgEcon
Menzie, Keith L.; Preckel, Paul V.; Schrader, Lee F..
A 40-region nonlinear programming model of a cooperative livestock feed production and distribution system, including possibilities for on-farm processing, is used to compare system organization and performance given two pricing strategies. Use of one price regardless of location results I higher average costs to patrons than pricing products to reflect cost to each region. Transportation costs are increased using uniform pricing. Cost effects are small and may be offset by other benefits of uniform pricing.

Cotton Price Policy and New Cereal Technology in the Malian Cotton Zone AgEcon
Coulibaly, Jeanne Y.; Sanders, John H.; Preckel, Paul V.; Baker, Timothy G..
During the last decade, cotton production and area have been declining as a result of depleting soil nutrients and low cotton prices in the cotton zone of Mali. This paper shows that the Malian government’s 2011 policy to increase the farm gate cotton price as a response to world cotton price increase enhances farm income but has less impact on cotton than on maize production. A complementary policy of introducing new sorghum technologies would have an equal impact on farmers’ incomes in the cotton zone of Mali.

Disaggregate Productivity Growth in Livestock Production: A Directional Malmquist Index Approach AgEcon
Ludena, Carlos E.; Hertel, Thomas W.; Preckel, Paul V.; Foster, Kenneth A.; Nin Pratt, Alejandro.
Limited data on the allocation of inputs to different activities has limited agricultural economists' attempts to measure sub-sector productivity growth in agriculture. However, recent developments have enabled us to estimate total factor productivity (TFP) growth for crops and livestock accounting for input-output allocation. This paper extends previous work on TFP measurement for livestock into ruminants and non-ruminant productivity measurement, given the differences in productivity growth rates among these species. The results show that the non-ruminant sector is more dynamic than the ruminant sector, driving most of the productivity growth within the livestock sector. Given the rapid rates of productivity growth observed recently, non-ruminant...

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF PHOSPHORUS - REDUCING TECHNOLOGIES IN PORK PRODUCTION AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Foster, Kenneth A..
Soil phosphorus levels have increased as pork production has become concentrated. Phosphorus-based manure management regulations for land application have been proposed by policy makers. The objective of this study is to determine benefits/costs of adopting two alternatives for reducing phosphorus: synthetic amino acids or phytase. An optimization model is constructed to determine optimal excreted nitrogen and phosphorus from alternative feed ingredients. Results are derived using different manure storage and application systems. While the two alternatives are not least-cost ingredients, they become profitable when producers are constrained by land. An important result is that the net cost of manure is negative.

ECONOMIC REPLACEMENT OF A HETEROGENEOUS HERD AgEcon
Boys, Kathryn A.; Li, Ning; Preckel, Paul V.; Schinckel, Allan P.; Foster, Kenneth A..
A model was developed and used to determine the optimal slaughter weights of pigs with heterogeneous growth raised in a 1,000 head barn and marketed in truckload groups. Explicitly recognizing the heterogeneity of pig weights and marketing the herd over time in truckload batches can substantially increase profit.

ESTIMATING THE IMPORTANCE OF SHELF SPACE CONFIGURATION ON RETAILER'S PROFIT AgEcon
Roucan-Kane, Maud; Martens, Bobby J.; Preckel, Paul V..
Retail shelf space allocation remains a central issue in grocery retailing. A literature review produced many studies on retail shelf space allocation, but none which evaluated shelf space allocation using three major factors at once: space, vertical height, and price. In this study, shelf space allocation was modeled from the perspective of a retailer maximizing profit using space, vertical height, and price. Using benchmarking, the results show how shelf configuration affects consumer demand and retailer profit. Parameters for the model were based on experience-based intuition. Although the initial results are not valuable at this point, the method and results create a rationale and motivation to gather primary data. Once primary data is collected, this...
